Losing Data is No Longer the End of the World

Data recovery is the last thing on our minds when we are busy.

Data Recovery Equipment

We’ve all been there. Despite knowing that we need to save our work at regular intervals and backup everything, there is always going to be that time when you’re engrossed in what you’re doing and have ploughed on regardless with that complex spreadsheet, calculations or report. You’ve almost finished, 5 o’clock is in sight, and backing up or saving your data is the last thing on your mind. But you can guarantee that will be exactly the moment when you have a power cut. And suddenly the screen is blank and everything has gone.

Even when you have been as careful as can be and saved every last meg on your external hard drive, you can never guarantee that your dog won’t decide to make a tasty meal out of it and have a good old chew.

Well breathe a sigh of relief as this no longer means the loss of all your hard work. Thankfully there are now expert data recovery organisations out there who can not only retrieve data you thought that you had lost, but can offer you a wealth of information and advice about how to stop it happening again. Both the emergency services and the GP of data recovery all-in-one.

These guys can also advise you on which of the wide range of data recovery systems and equipment are the best value for money and meet your individual needs.

Unfortunately they weren’t able to advise on how to tempt my dog into eating dog food instead of electrical equipment.

How to Improve Your PC’s Speed for Free in Seven Easy Steps

Does your computer start up slowly? Do applications run slowly and hang all the time? Do you want to get rid of these problems for free? These steps here will probably help you resolve your problems.1. When you turn on your computer, ensure that there are no media (discs) in the ROM drive or any attached USB devices. Having any of these causes the computer to start slowly as it tries to read them for possible boot options.2. Disable startup programs such as Windows Sidebar and any programs which are installed that run at startup. These programs cause your computer to boot slowly as it has to load them before you can begin to use your computer. To do this, run Windows Defender. Click on Tools and select Software Explorer. Click on the category button to display Startup Programs. Click once on the displayed programs to see which are available for disabling and disable them. You can also disable programs that run at startup by running them, and ensuring that the “Run At Startup” option is not checked or allowed.

3. Click on the battery icon on the taskbar in the lower right-hand corner of your screen. This displays the power options menu. If “High Performance” is not selected as the power plan, select it. This power plan maximizes system performance.

4. End application processes which are not in use at a particular time. These processes compete with the programs you are running for available computer memory and speed. Such processes include Bluetooth, dictionaries, search bars etc (you can always restart them when you need them by running the applications again). To end processes, open the Task Manager. There are several ways to do this:

a. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc. This is the quickest way.

b. Right-click on the taskbar and choose Task Manager from the menu.

c. Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and choose Start Task Manager from the options that appear.
In the Task Manager, click on the Processes tab to display currently running processes and right-click on the process you want to end. Select End Process or End Process Tree to end that particular process. If you are not sure what process it is, read the descriptions that accompany each process.

5. Disable the Windows Aero color scheme (this is the functionality that gives your computer interface a transparent, glassy look). Windows Aero consumes computer memory and it is advisable to switch to another color scheme which uses less computer memory if your computer is running slow. To do this, right- click on an empty position on your desktop window and select Personalization from the menu that appears. You can also open Personalization by clicking on the Start button and selecting Control Panel and then clicking on Personalization. Under Personalization, select Windows Color and Appearance and choose another option such as Windows Vista Basic or Windows Classic.

6. Defragment your hard disk regularly. As data is added, changed and deleted from your hard disk, it creates non-contiguous portions of data (spaces usually occur where data has been deleted and changes made to data are saved in locations different from the original files). This is known as fragmentation and causes your computer to work harder to find a particular piece of data. This tends to slow a computer down. Defragmenting your hard disk rearranges the data so that it works more efficiently. Defragmentation usually runs on a schedule but you can run the disk defragmenter manually. To do this, click on the Start button and select Computer. Right-click on your primary hard disk (or any other hard disk partitions you would like to defragment) and choose Properties. Click on the Tools tab and select Defragment Now. When the application opens, click on Defragment now.

7. Run Disk Clean Up. This option deletes unnecessary files from your hard disk and frees up space which enables your computer to run faster. To do this, click on the Start button and select Computer. Right-click on your primary hard disk (or any other hard disk partitions you would like to clean) and choose Properties. Click on the General tab and select Disk Cleanup. Select the files you would like to delete, click OK and then click Delete Files to confirm.

Follow these steps and there will be a noticeable improvement in your computer’s speed and performance.

Easy Steps to Improve Your PC’s Performance

Image representing Microsoft as depicted in Cr...

Unless your computer is fresh out of the box, it’s probably not running as fast as it used to. Our PCs fill up with all sorts of good stuff — documents, music, videos, programs, games, downloads — and bad stuff like viruses and spyware, too. Over time they can get bogged down.

Much like oil changes for your car, a little periodic maintenance can help extend your computer’s lifespan. And in a tight economy, it’s smart to take a few simple steps to help keep your PC running like new, instead of buying a new one.

We’ve collected a series of tips and tricks to help your computer run more smoothly and broaden its useful life. They are easy enough that anyone, even a novice, can run them — but they can all help bring that “new car smell” back to your computer.

Computers with Windows XP and newer operating systems come with several simple utilities to check, clean and de-clutter your hard drive. Doing so will free it up to access your programs and files more quickly.  Disk Check identifies and removes hard disk errors caused by crashes or power failures. It’s a good idea to run it every few months to make sure the drive itself is functioning properly.

    • Click on

    • Right click on

    • Choose “

    • Select the

Disk Cleanup removes temporary files and unnecessary detritus from your hard drive, freeing up space. For example, when browsing the Internet your computer collects thousands of temporary files to help Web sites load more quickly. But over time these files create clutter, so it’s a good idea to clean them out. We recommend running this around once a month.

    • Click on

My Computer

    • Right click on your

C drive

    • Choose “

    • Select

Disk Cleanup

The Disk Defragmenter improves hard drive performance and speed by piecing together parts of files that have been broken apart. As you use your computer, files are constantly added, changed and removed. Over time, these files and folders are broken into chunks of data, so when you want to access the file your hard disk has to work harder and look in more places to find all of its contents. This is known as fragmentation. The more full your hard drive becomes, the more likely it is your files will be fragmented. The Defragmenter pieces those chunks of data back together, so your hard drive can load them more quickly.

We recommend using this utility at least once a month — and it’s best to run when you’re finished using the computer for the day, as it can often take over an hour to complete.

Windows XP and higher can automatically check to see if it needs to be updated. Microsoft often supplies patches, updates and security fixes for Windows (as well as Office and other Microsoft programs) that should always be installed to keep your PC up-to-date. The beauty of Automatic Updates is that it checks with Microsoft on its own and lets you know when you need to do something. So just make sure that Automatic Updates are on:

    • Click

Start

    , and then click

Control Panel

    • Click

Automatic Updates

    • Choose

Automatic (recommended)Though it sounds counterintuitive, dropping an unwanted file in the Recycle Bin doesn’t actually remove it from your hard drive. To prevent accidental deletion, a file can remain in the Recycle Bin and continue to take up space. Periodically emptying the Recycle Bin helps free space for the files you want to keep.

By the way, if running all these individual fixes doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, there is software available that can optimize your computer in a few simple steps — cleaning our your hard drive, speeding startup and shutdown, and repairing errors. AOL offers two that are worth checking out: PerfectSpeed and System Mechanic.

Finally, perhaps the most common causes of computer sluggishness are viruses and spyware. You may already have computer security software installed on your computer, but with so many new threats created every day, it must have updated definition files to be of any use.

If you don’t already have security software on your PC, make sure you install it and keep it updated. Paid AOL members can download security software from McAfee for free, as part of their membership, at safety.aol.com. If you’re not a paid AOL member, you can still find special deals on McAfee software at this site.

HDD Regenerator 1.71

HDD Regenerator 2011 is a unique program for regeneration of physically damaged hard disk drives. It does not hide bad sectors, it really restores them!

Program features

  • Ability to detect physical bad sectors on a hard disk drive surface.
  • Ability to repair physical bad sectors (magnetic errors) on a hard disk surface.
  • The product ignores file system, scans disk at physical level. It can be used with FAT, NTFS or any other file system, and also with unformatted or unpartitioned disks.
  • Starting process directly under Windows XP / Vista / 7.
  • Bootable regenerating flash can be created from the program and used to automatically start regenerating process.
  • Bootable regenerating CD allows starting regenerating process under DOS automatically.

Main benefits

Hard disk drive is an integral part of every computer. It stores all your information. One of the most prevalent defects of hard drives is bad sectors on the disk surface. Bad sectors are a part of the disk surface which contains not readable, but frequently necessary information. As a result of bad sectors you may have difficulties to read and copy data from your disk, your operating system becomes unstable and finally your computer may unable to boot altogether. When a hard drive is damaged with bad sectors, the disk not only becomes unfit for use, but also you risk losing information stored on it. The HDD Regenerator can repair damaged hard disks without affecting or changing existing data. As a result, previously unreadable and inaccessible information is restored.

How it works

Almost 60% of all hard drives damaged with bad sectors have an incorrectly magnetized disk surface. We have developed an algorithm which is used to repair damaged disk surfaces. This technology is hardware independent, it supports many types of hard drives and repairs damage that even low-level disk formatting cannot repair. As a result, previously unreadable information will be restored. Because of the way the repair is made, the existing information on the disk drive will not be affected!

Can the HDD Regenerator repair your drive?

Almost 60 % of damaged hard disks can be repaired by regeneration. You can always download free demo version and try to regenerate the first found bad sector. The main purpose of the unregistered demo version is to display a report which contains information about the possibility to regenerate the entire disk by means of the registered full version. If the first found bad sector has been successfully regenerated, you can buy the product to regenerate all bad sectors on your hard drive. If the first bad sector has NOT been successfully regenerated, then replace your hard disk drive as soon as possible.

Important notes

Since the program does not change the logical structure of a hard drive, the file system may still show some sectors marked earlier as “bad”, and other disk utilities such as Scandisk will detect logical bad sectors even though the disk has been successfully regenerated and is no longer damaged by physical bad sectors. If you want to remove these marks, repartition the hard disk drive.

Partition a USB Flash Drive in Windows XP

One way to Partition a USB Flash Drive from Windows XP and mark it active “bootable”. Windows detects Flash Drives as “Removable Disks” and flash drives are typically shipped formatted as a “Super Floppy” (USB-FDD without a partition table) . The Windows built in format utility cannot create a partition table on Removable Disks. Furthermore, the diskpart utility in Windows XP will not allow you to partition Removable Media, although diskpart does work for partitioning a Flash Drive from Windows Vista/7.

To address the inability to Partition a Flash Drive in Windows XP, you need to use a third party low level partitioning tool such as BOOTICE, created by Pauly. BOOTICE Home Page

Note: I partition my flash drives as USB-HDD (with a partition table), simply because my computers support booting from Flash Drives formatted to be seen as a USB Hard Disk.

One way to Partition a Flash Drive from Windows

  1. Download BOOTICE, unzip, and run BOOTICE.EXE
  2. Make sure your “USB Flash Drive” is set as the Destination Disk
  3. Click Parts Manage
  4. Click ReFormat USB Disk
  5. Select USB-HDD mode, and click Next
  6. Select Format as Fat32, and click OK

You should now have an active “bootable” USB-HDD Fat32 formatted Flash Drive, containing a partition table with a single partition. You should be able to Boot It as a Hard Drive.

How to Clear Windows Recent Documents Automatically on Logoff

As discussed in a previous tip, Windows can accumulate a large number of entries in the recent documents folder if the folder is not cleared out periodically. One way to accomplish this automatically is to configure Windows to clear the folder every time a given user logs off or shuts down. Note that each user account has its own folder for recent documents so this is a per-user setting.

The setting involves a Registry edit so the usual precautions about editing the Windows Registry hold. Always back up the Registry first. Unless you know how to get back to where you started, don’t attempt to edit the Registry.

The Windows Group Policy Editor can be used to create the setting but, unfortunately, Home editions of Windows do not come with this management console. So I will give the direct procedure for editing the Registry.

The Registry key that has to be edited is the same for Windows XP, Vista and 7. It is possible that the key may be missing on some systems. It was not present on one Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit system that I looked at but the Registry file given below worked just fine. In all cases the results of editing are the responsibility of the user.

I will assume that you know how to open the Registry Editor (regedit.exe).

1. Open the Registry editor and navigate to the key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

2. In the right pane, right-click on a empty area and select New – DWORD Value [or
DWORD (32-bit) Value in 64-bit machines]
3. Name the DWORD ClearRecentDocsOnExit
4. Give the new DWORD a data value of 1
5. Exit Regedit

For those who prefer, I give the contents of a REG file below that can be used to edit the Registry. Open a blank file in Notepad, copy and paste the contents below, and name the file something like “clearrecent.reg”. The critical part of the file name is the extension reg . Make sure Notepad doesn’t tack on txt at the end. To use the file, right-click it and choose “Merge” from the context menu. Administrator privileges are required.

If you decide that you don’t like this setting, go to the Registry key and change the value of ClearRecentDocsOnExit to 0. Or you can delete the whole DWORD. (But be careful not to delete anything else.)

Here are the contents of the REG file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] “ClearRecentDocsOnExit”=dword:00000001

Run as command

In some situations, you might not be able to run a program using the account under which you’re currently logged on. This is most likely if you’re logged on using an account in the Power Users group and the program you want to use requires administrative privileges.

Run as command

Use the Runas command from a command window, from the Run dialog box, or in the Target field of a shortcut’s properties dialog box to specify that you want a program to start with a specific user account. For instance, you can create a shortcut that opens a Command Prompt window using another user’s permissions by typing the following syntax in the Target field of the shortcut’s properties dialog box:

Syntax

RUNAS [/profile] [/env] [/netonly] /user:<UserName> program

/profile if the user’s profile needs to be loaded
/env to use current environment instead of user’s.
/netonly use if the credentials specified are for remote access only.
/user <UserName> should be in form USER@DOMAIN or DOMAIN\USER
program command line for EXE. See below for examples

Examples:
> runas /profile /user:mymachine\administrator cmd
> runas /profile /env /user:mydomain\admin “mmc %windir%\system32\dsa.msc”
> runas /env /user:user@domain.microsoft.com “notepad \”my file.txt\””

After you issue the command or activate the shortcut, you’ll be prompted to enter the password for the specified user account. For security reasons, you cannot save the password with the shortcut. Note that the Runas command does not work with Microsoft Management Console (MMC) shortcuts; if you’re logged in as a limited user and you want to start the Computer Management console using an administrator’s account, right-click and use the Run As command on the shortcut menu.

The Run As menu choice works with most third-party programs and many Windows utilities and Control Panel options. (Hold down the Shift key when right-clicking a Control Panel icon to use this option.) A handful of applications that are started indirectly by Windows XP cannot be started with the Run As menu choice. You’ll strike out if you try to use Run As with Windows Explorer, for instance. The option is also unavailable for desktop items created by the system and for objects in the Network Connections folder. Interestingly, a full menu of options is available when you press Shift and right-click any icon in the Printers And Faxes folder, and then choose Run As. Use this option if you’re running under an ordinary user account and need to delete or pause items in the print queue that were created by another user.

Free Studio: One Multi-Purpose Converter To Rule Them All

We convert media types from one format to another nearly every day. Whether we are about to transfer a song to our portable media player, upload a video to YouTube, or size down an image by changing its format, we have to go through a format conversion process.

Usually for different types of media conversions, we have separate programs installed: one for video format conversions, one for audio format conversions, and one for image format conversions. With DVDVideoSoft’s Free Studio, you can get a single program for all your media type conversions.

Free Studio is a freeware for Windows that supports an impressive range of video formats as well as audio and image formats. Find our comprehensive coverage of this remarkable freeware below and see why you should be using it.

Download and Installation

Free Studio runs on Windows XP, Vista, and 7. In order to get the program, you will need to download its setup file which is in the EXE format and about 60MB large. That seemingly large setup size completely justifies itself once the program’s features are explored and understood. In addition to the features, which we highlight in the following paragraphs, the program supports multiple languages. A total of 12 languages are supported including Dutch, English, Spanish, French, and Italian.

The multi-language support certainly helps deliver features to a wider audience unlike most media conversion freeware that targets only English-speaking computer users.

User-Interface

When you run the program for the first time, this is the type of picture you will see:

The big bright buttons let you enter different categories of media tools. A clicking sound can be heard as you place the mouse pointer over these buttons. The sound nicely adds to the overall feel of the program.

In case you want to change the default language without reinstalling the program, you can do so from the top-right.

Overall, the interface maintains a fresh look without ever tiring its user. If we were to grade it, the interface would get an ‘A’.

Let us now move on to the type of media tools offered by Free Studio.

Image Tools

Using the “Photo & Images” button from the main window of the program, you can enter the images portal of Free Studio. Here you will see an impressive list of image tools you can use.

Starting from the top of the list, you can use these tools to:

  • Convert the format of images and resize them
  • Convert videos to individual JPG images
  • Create 3D photographs
  • Record a portion of your screen to create a screencast

Thus not only do you get handy image tools, but you can also record screencasts thereby eliminating the need of an extra application for the purpose.

Audio Tools

From the main window, the “MP3 & Audio” button lets you access the program’s audio tools.

The audio tools let you perform the following functions:

  • Convert audio files between various formats
  • Edit audio files
  • Extract audio from videos
  • Burn audio to an optical disc either as an audio CD or as an MP3 disc

Like the image tools, the audio tools save you the need to have a bunch of other programs installed. The audio tools section of Free Studio will replace your current software for audio format conversions, audio editing, and audio extraction from video.

Video Tools

Free Studio offers an impressive array of video tools. These tools are spread out into 5 categories that are visible in the program’s main window. The first category is “YouTube” and its tools can be seen in the following image:

The YouTube tools let you download videos from YouTube and directly convert their file format thereby effectively merging the download and conversion steps. The application even lets you upload videos to YouTube from its interface.

The second set of video tools is categorized as “CD, DVD, BD.” The tools included under this category can be seen in the following image:

These tools are basically disc-writing tools. In other words, these tools let you burn videos to a video CD, a DVD, or a BluRay disc after passing the video through the appropriate file conversions.

The third category of video tools is “DVD & Video.” See the following image for the list of tools it contains:

As you can see in the image, this category offers video tools that you will probably be using the most. From video editing to video format conversion, tools in this category perform all those functions.

The “Mobiles” category of video tools will let you convert videos for specific devices. These will come in handy when you do not know which video formats your devices can handle. The following image is what tools in this category look like:

The last category of video tools is “Apple Devices.” The function of this category is the same as “Mobile” with video tools for each Apple device labeled separately.

Usage

Method of usage of all tools offered by Free Studio is nearly the same. Once you click on a tool in one of the abovementioned categories, you will encounter a window similar to the image below:

The top section is where you specify the input file. You can specify multiple files in case of batch conversions. Underneath you specify the output folder path and details of the output format. When your preferences are set, you click on the “Convert” button to initiate the process.

Conclusion

Take a look at your installed programs. As we pointed out earlier, you will notice you have multiple applications installed for nearly all the functions that are being offered by Free Studio. Replacing all those applications by a single program will not only be convenient but also significantly free up your disk space. With the advantages it offers, Free Studio is a must-have application for all computer users.

10 Things You Need To Know About Internet Explorer 9

After lot of fanfare, Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) was finally released. It is touted as the best browser by Microsoft and comes with support for the latest technology in town. Well, that may sound a bit exaggerating, but IE9 did indeed come with several impressive features. In case you are wondering whether you should upgrade or not, here’s a breakdown of its features and all the things that you need to know about IE9.

1. Hardware acceleration

The most noticeable difference in IE9 is its speed. Not only does it seem faster than previous version of IE, it is also faster than other browsers like Chrome and Firefox. The main reason for this is due to hardware acceleration. By tapping into the power of your graphics card, it is able to render pages more quickly. The latest version of Chrome and Firefox also comes with hardware acceleration, but IE9 seems to has a better implementation. In short, IE9 is fast.

2. CSS3 and HTML5 support

Web developers hate Internet Explorer, because they never comply to web standard. Mention IE6 and you will instantly hear curses and swears from developers. That is the past. IE9 is now fully standard compliance and it support CSS3 and HTML5 fully. No, it does not support the new WebM video format yet, but you can install the addon from Google website.

3. One bar to rule them all

There is no more search bar in IE 9. All you get now is the One bar (aka the address bar, or URL bar) where you perform searches (in Bing) or type in URL.

4. Smart screen filter and tracking protection

Internet Explorer has often been critized as being insecure and is always the security loophole for the main OS. In IE9, there is an improvement in the security aspect – some is built on top of IE8 technology and other is newly added. The smart screen filter can now detect malware and phising sites and the tracking protection can protect you from being tracked on certain sites.

5. New interface – Tinier tabs

The first thing that you will notice on IE9 is its new interface. The search bar is now combined with the address bar and the tab bar is now located beside the address bar. While it may look clean and streamlined, the moment you got more than 10 tabs open, the tabs will shrink and you will have difficulty navigating around the tabs.

6. Drag tab to open in new window

Nothing new for Google Chrome user. You can now drag a tab out of the tab bar and have it open in a new window. Similarly, to combine two IE9 window, just drag the tabs from one to another.

7. Pin sites to the taskbar

IE9 is developed by Microsoft, so there is no doubt that it integrates best with Windows 7. The best example is the pinning of sites to the taskbar. Simply drag the tab to the taskbar and it will instantly pin itself to the taskbar. Accessing your favourite site from the taskbar is definitely faster than accessing it from the bookmark. In addition, you can also create jumplist item for your site.

8. New download manager

The new download manager include a malware/virus scanner and can scan the files before the downloading begin.

9. IE9 as a window update, not separate install

Unlike IE8 where you can download and install as an application, IE9 exists as a Windows Update. Like any other Windows update, you will need to restart your computer after the installation.

10. No support for XP

Still using Windows XP? You can have IE 8 instead. IE 9 is supported to run in Windows 7 or Vista only. Perhaps it is time for XP to die too?

How to install

Microsoft will be issuing a Windows Update on the 21st of March 2011 and IE9 will be included in that update. In another word, whether you like it or not, IE9 will be installed in your computer, unless you don’t intend to update your Windows forever. If you are patient enough, you can wait for the Windows update and let it upgrade itself automatically. Your IE8 will be replaced with IE 9.

For those who want it now, you can download the installer file here.

Is IE9 better than Chrome or Firefox?

If you have been using IE7 and 8, you will definitely appreciate the changes in IE 9. However, if you are already using Chrome or Firefox and you love them, it will be very difficult for Microsoft to entice you over. The functionality are almost similar, but Chrome and Firefox have the added advantage of a huge library of addons and extensions. What’s more, IE 9 only works in Windows whereas the other browsers work in (almost) all platforms.

Nevertheless, effort must be commended to Microsoft for coming up with such a great browser. It is indeed their best browser ever.

What do you think? Will you switch to IE 9?
